Queen Pu’abi is considered the first-ever recorded queen. She ruled over the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia, in modern-day Iraq, over 4000 years ago.
In ancient Mesopotamia, rulers were considered the divine embodiment of the gods, and often served as priests and priestesses as well. Ancient leaders used their physical presence and beauty to evoke an emotional response from their people, further asserting their right to rule.

The Royal Cemetery of Ur proves this, and Queen Pu’abi’s tomb was its crown jewel. The site was excavated by Sir Leonard Woolley between 1922 and 1934, and graves 800 and 789 were attributed to the Queen's burial site.
The royal remains were found in grave 800, fully adorned with a beaded cloak and 6 kg of jewellery. These included necklaces, rings, diadems and other hairpieces, belts, and three gold pins that once fastened her clothes. From each of these pins hung a lapis cylinder seal. One of them bore her name and title, translated as: Puabi, Queen. Although the name Pu’abi is not present in any historical lists, the fact that she held the title *eresh* and that her seal does not mention a king as her husband suggests that she may have ruled in her own right.
